Standing Meditation Basics: Why Standing Still Can Be the Most Challenging Part of Practice
Share
After many years of teaching traditional movement practices, one thing continues to surprise beginners:
Standing still is often the most challenging place to begin.
Many people assume it is simple.
"You're only standing."
How difficult could it be?
Yet once they try standing with mindful attention, something different happens.
· the shoulders begin to tighten
· balance becomes less steady
· attention starts to wander
From my experience, this is where meaningful practice truly begins.
Not with movement.
But with learning to observe:
· posture
· breathing
· attention
Standing meditation often reveals everyday movement habits that we rarely notice.
When the body feels well organized, breathing often becomes more comfortable.
When breathing becomes more comfortable, it is often easier to stay present.
This isn't just theory.
It's something many people begin to notice through regular, mindful practice.
I'm always interested to hear how others experienced their first standing practice.
Did it feel more challenging than you expected?
Reflection
Traditional practice often begins with the simplest things.
Simple does not always mean easy.
Sometimes standing quietly teaches us more than constant movement.
