Preparatory Breathing: Why Traditional Practice Often Begins with a Quiet Breath

One detail is often overlooked before practice begins.

Preparation.

Many people are eager to start moving immediately.

Traditional practice usually takes a different approach.

Before movement,

we first create a moment to settle.

This simple breathing preparation is not about doing more.

It is about arriving.

After a busy day—or even after waking up—the body and mind may still feel occupied by previous activities.

Rather than rushing into movement,

we pause for a few calm breaths.

A simple approach might be:

· breathe in gently through the nose

· breathe out slowly through the mouth

· repeat several relaxed cycles

The goal isn't to change the breath.

It's simply to help us transition into practice with greater awareness.

Once we feel more settled,

movement often becomes smoother,

and it is easier to stay connected to the body throughout the practice.

Do you have a small ritual that helps you prepare before moving?

Reflection

Sometimes a calm beginning shapes the entire experience that follows.
